A tragic incident occurred in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district where a nurse was raped and murdered on her way home from work. The alleged attacker, a daily wage laborer named Dharmendra Kumar from Bareilly, was apprehended on August 14.
The nurse, who worked at a private hospital in Nainital, was last seen on July 30. Her body was discovered in an abandoned area in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district. The following day, her sister reported her missing after she failed to return home.
According to the police, Kumar assaulted the nurse in a secluded spot, strangled her, and stole her belongings, including her jewelry, before fleeing. Authorities tracked him down in Rajasthan using the victim’s phone location.
SSP Manjunath T C revealed that Kumar, who has a history of drug abuse, did not know the nurse personally. On the day of the crime, he targeted her after noticing her alone. Despite her attempt to resist, she was overpowered and killed. This incident comes amidst a wave of protests by the healthcare community, still reeling from the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. Accusations of a police cover-up in Kolkata have added to the unrest.
