A major landslide struck East Sikkim early Tuesday, causing extensive damage to a 510-MW hydroelectric project on the Teesta River. The landslide, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. near Dipu Dara in Singtam, heavily damaged the powerhouse and GIS building of the Teesta Stage V project operated by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
The landslide also destroyed 17-18 homes, prompting the evacuation of six families. These families are now being sheltered at the NHPC Guest House in Balutar, which has been set up as a temporary relief camp.
The Singtam-Dikchu road has been blocked by the landslide, but a temporary route through Dochum is now open. Gangtok’s district collector, Tushar Nikhare, has asked the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to expedite repairs. The BRO has committed to restoring road access as quickly as possible.
A technical team from Delhi will visit the site to assess the damage and recommend repair strategies. Additionally, the Department of Mines and Geology will investigate the landslide and develop both short-term and long-term recovery plans.
This incident follows recent landslides in North Sikkim that stranded tourists and caused fatalities. As Sikkim remains a popular destination, officials are focused on improving disaster preparedness and response.
